Hello Reader,

I love some good structure and admittedly, I've been thrown off lately. Between road trips for soccer tournaments and Daylight Saving, this last month has been a lesson in flexibility.

But, I'm here picking up this Decor Questions Series - answering YOUR design questions to make home styling easier.

Today, I'm addressing a good one - How to Mix Wood Tones?

This can be a challenge for sure! I've brainstormed six of my best tips to make it simple & second nature.

Mixing Wood Tones

When it comes to mixing up anything - you can do whatever you want but a few good tips can help things feel authentic. I love using wood elements in my designs and here are some guidelines I follow:

  1. Find Primary Wood Tone - Before mixing wood tones, establish one wood color that will anchor the space. If you have wood flooring, this would be a good place to start.
  2. Identify Undertones - Just like paint, find the underlying colors, wood will be Warm, Cool, or Neutral. Warm likes warm, cool likes cool, and neutral plays well with both. *best tip
  3. Limit 2-3 Types of Wood - Keeps it manageable & cohesive
  4. Use a Bridging Element - If needed, use something like a rug, painted furniture, or countertops to connect two wood types
  5. Space Out Tones - Spread out the wood types to feel intentional
  6. Add Metal and Other Natural Elements - Include other details to create a layered, dynamic look with hardware, fixtures, and woven elements
