What Should I Do With This Space? Angled Corner Dilemma

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

Here we go you guys, the first week in the series, "What Should I Do With This Space?"

If you remember last week, I asked you to share YOUR most challenging spaces - and you delivered!

I love tackling design challenges, it's like a decor puzzle for me. And I'm super excited to share that with you all. (Have a space to submit? scroll down for the details).

Today we've got a tricky little bonus room corner with lots of angles. While this space is definitely unique - it's a common issue and I think my solutions will help other rooms too.

Challenging Space:

Corners can be tricky and then you add some angles and it makes for an absolute design dilemma.

When looking at this space, here are some challenges I see that need to be addressed:

  • Roof angle: creates a corner and a wall that cannot be used in a traditional way
  • Height: the angle and ceiling create some height but the decor is all very low
  • Lines: Between the angle, the corner, the stairs to the side, this area has so many lines, our eyeballs might feel overwhelmed

Possible Solution:

Alright - here is what I came up! I love the existing table - I moved it closer to outside corner & started there. I'll go through each change to and explain my thinking:

  • Add tall, full plant in corner to soften that angle & the lines
  • Place low profile accent chair at a diagonal, to create more of a rounded, cozy layout & functionality
  • Hang round mirror on wall much higher - this solved two issues: added height, and round shape contrasts all the lines (the existing round mirror could work too, I just used a slightly larger, more proportionate one)
  • Include more round shapes with arched frame and slouchy basket to offset those lines
  • Used texture in basket, mirror, and pillow for more depth

What do you think?
