Hello Reader,
One of the questions I'm most often asked in my emails is, "how I do I mix decor styles?"
I get it. My own home style doesn't neatly fit into one little box (And I don't think it should!) - I'd say I'm mostly organic modern, leaning pretty modern with a touch of boho.
But you know, show me some mid century windows and I'll quickly shift that way.
So what do we do with all this? Does it even matter?
Heck yeah it matters! In my humble opinion, we want our spaces to feel authentic and balanced. Going all in on one style can feel forced while too many feels like a mashup.
Welp, here are some tried & true tips to keep it all balanced (read full article for more details):
How to Mix Decor Styles:
First, determine which styles you lean towards and then:
- Find Common Ground - see where the styles overlap (not sure? check my article for examples!)
- Choose a Primary Style - select one to take up about 70% of choices (if your house has a specific architectural style, I suggest that one)
- Select a Main Color Palette - looking for overlapping color themese
- Remember Texture - every style has specific textures
- Mix & Match Furniture - include both styles so it feel intentional
- Balance Decor Pieces - look to include small details of both styles

This family room is a good example of a mix of styles (it was an evolving space on a budget): Organic Modern + Boho + Mid Century.
