Hello Reader,
We've got sunshine here in Oregon, my bathroom remodel is coming along (stay tuned), and I'm excited to share another reader submitted space.
If you're just joining us, I asked readers to share their most challenging spaces - I'll share my decor ideas and everyone can take away some ideas to use YOUR HOME.
Alright, let's get started!
Real Reader Space:
Let me just start by saying this dining room area is already so lovely. The floors, the natural light, and what a cool bench nook.
However the reader asked me to help "bring it to life" so I'm going to share some thoughts on how to make it feel a bit more authentic, layered, and vibrant.
You can apply the same principles to your own spaces.
Even though this space is stunning, I sense a few things that we might want to improve on:
- Proportion: The back wall is fairly wide so the pillows and mirror seem like they are floating a bit
- Cold vs Warm: Wood floors and and paint colors are warm and cozy while the silver chandelier and mirror are pretty icy cool
- Flat: Each element sort of feels like it's on its own - basically the opposite of depth & layered, very common issue for rooms
Designed Space:
Alright - here is what I came up! I'll go through each change and explain my thinking:
- Added Warmth: Removed the cool items (light & mirror) and replaced with a basket weave pendant, lively & abstract artwork, textured ceramic bowl
- Custom Layered Look: Added wall mount cushion (can apply with adhesive) and art ledge to change and layer artwork as desired
- Height: Added a taller more vertical snake plant with stand, tall vases, and vertical artwork
- Proportion: Chose a picture ledge to make better use of wide wall, plus wider back cushions to create a more grounded feel.
BONUS: Like in other spaces, I styled the real greenery asymmetrically (tall plant on left, tall wall mount plant vase on right) so it feels balanced but NOT matchy
What do you think? I hope this design gives you some ideas about layering!
