Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

Ready for another week in the series, "What Should I Do With This Space?" I'm coming in a day late, but today we're going to look at an entryway corner and I'll point out some tips that work for every space!

If you're just joining us, I asked readers to submit their most challenging spaces - I'll share my decor ideas and everyone can take away some ideas. (Have a space to submit? scroll down for the details).

This is what I like to call, what to do when something just feels...off.

Real Reader Space:

Alright, so here's an entryway corner submitted by one of you! It's a perfectly lovely space, nice floors and details. However, I'm guessing this was submitted as it just feels slightly off.

Remember - we're going to tackle this specific room but, in doing so, you can apply the solutions to your own spaces.

When faced with a space that's not quite giving the vibe we're hoping for, I like to go back to some of the basics. We can identify a few challenges here:

  • Proportion: The table is charming but feels a bit too small for this big corner
  • Movement: The little fairy lights give us some movement but our eyes don't really dance around
  • Height: Common issue, everything is pretty low

Designed Space:

Alright - here is what I came up! I'll go through each change to and explain my thinking:

  • Proportion: Chose a corner table that is larger, taller, and fit the space (Use the 2/3 rule - it's about two thirds of the entire corner walls) PLUS the drawer gives it some functionality for keys and whatnot
  • Movement: Use rounded vases, wild greenery, and abstract brush stroke art work to keep our eyes moving with all the lines, corners, & beams
  • Height: Add a higher table, tall vases, and vertical artwork

BONUS: Because this space was so "perfect" - as in lots of lines, trim, door details, I would style the greenery asymmetrically so it feels layered, authentic, and a little wild

What do you think? I hope this design gives some ideas about how to tackle corner and the power of height & asymmetry!

Table Option

Came across this charming table - it would work as well - good proportion, rounded shape, creates more forward facing entry
