Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

It's another sunny week & I'm excited to share another reader submitted space. Plus, if you missed my bonus email earlier this week - see below for information on how to claim free design resources.

If you're just joining us, I asked readers to share their most challenging spaces and I'll share my decor ideas and everyone can take away some ideas to use YOUR HOME.

Alright, let's get started!

Real Reader Space:

We've got another beauty here - the angled ceilings and mid century vibes are lovely. I imagine this is a great space for spending the evenings.

However the reader asked me for help with the wide, angled walls - which can be a common dilemma. I found solutions to make this space proportional, balanced, and more custom feeling.

You can apply the same principles to your own spaces.

Even though this space is pretty, there are a few things that we might want to improve on:

  • Ceilings Not Maximized: The ceilings are lovely though the light fixture don't really draw your eye up there
  • Balance: because of the angle and the furniture layout, the right side feels very big, sparse, and unequal
  • Proportion: The back wall is fairly wide so the art work seems to be floating above the couch

Designed Space:

Alright - here is what I came up! I'll go through each change and explain my thinking:

  • Updated Fan & Fixtures : Removed builder grade light and older ceiling light and replaced with a contemporary ceiling fan with mid century vibes that also serves as a design focal point. Updated recessed light also makes vault feel more modern.
  • Balance: Added "weight" to the right side of room with large vases and extra large branches (go big!) - this visually fills the space and also makes it feel more grounded. If the vases is not realistic, a large potted plant behind the piano would also work (massive monstera would work)
  • Softness: Added rounded items (vases, mirror, wall hangings) and greenery to soften all the lines
  • Proportion: Chose a much larger horizontal print above the couch. Big wide walls love big wide art work.

BONUS ๐Ÿ‘‡: Just for fun, I mixed up this space with all white walls - I love the contrast with the wood tones. I used Chantilly Lace from Benjamin Moore, one of my favorites

What do you think? I hope this design gives you some ideas about angled ceilings and softening lines!
