Here we are at Week 2 of the Decluttering for Real Life series! As I improve on my organization - I'm excited to share these tips with you. Also, be sure to go to the end and click which TYPE of email content you enjoy most so I can focus on that for you :)
Last week I shared the OHIO device (Only Handle It Once) which gives your brain a clever trick to handle clutter.
Today, I'm sharing two types of decluttering methods that can make a big difference. Personally, I can find myself overwhelmed with trying to organize and when I just commit to one of these, it all comes together much easier.
So, basically - when tackling clutter we can either clear by category items OR by defined spaces.
Categories would be like the types of items (clothes, books, utensils, etc.) and spaces could be larger areas like entire room or even just a closet.
Neither is right or better. It's just about deciding WHEN to use each method.
CATEGORY METHOD
Use for broad types of items such as clothing, books, tools, etc.
You will cover various parts of the home
Basically, say to yourself, "now, I am only sorting this item" and ignore the others for later
It can help to choose a destination first for the specific category. For example, I cleared my boys' clothes last week and we donated to the Northwest Children's Outreach which made it feel like a very defined activity.
SINGLE SPACE METHOD
Use to declutter one very specific area or room
Often helps to narrow down even more, instead of "bedroom" start with just the dresser
This method is helpful for spaces with a variety of items, like junk drawers or closets
I also use the single space method when I'm overwhelmed and anxious. I will say, "now I am decluttering this one drawer in this one dresser of this one bedroom."
What do you think? Can you see yourself using these methods at all? I've found that decluttering helps BEFORE I tackle any home styling or projects so I hope this is useful for you!
