The Easy Math Formula That Works Almost Anywhere

Hello Reader,

You know, we all have some weaknesses and mine is measuring. I tell you, I have to measure and re-measure and then measure one more time. Whether it was back in my sewing days or choosing furniture, man, I need to keep that measuring tape nearby.

Admittedly, I used to order things thinking I had a handle only to realize I was wrong. Ugh.

Welp. I've come up with some good strategies for deciding if something will fit in a space (like using painter's tape to visualize something in advance - this is perfect for rugs, mirrors, and shelves...)

Well, there's one other little trick that really helps with measuring and choosing sizes - and that's the 2/3 Rule. I'm telling you - this little trick is like magic!

The 2/3 Rule

What is it? It's a basic proportion that feels balanced and can be applied to so many home size situations.

Basically, when one thing is 2/3 the size of the other thing, our brains say, "hey that's balanced." So if something feels off - check this!

For example, if a couch is 90" long a coffee table that is about 60" (or 2/3 of 90) will feel like a good size. It doesn't have to be EXACT so a table that's 57" would be just fine, but it gives you a rough idea.

It sounds like math but it's super quick to put into your calculator or maybe even mental math. Here are some examples (insert your own numbers)

  1. Console Tables - measure the usable wall space, let's say it's 6' wide, then you could use a table about 4' wide
  2. Vanity Mirrors - take the length of the vanity, let's say 60" wide, then you could use a mirror about 40" wide. (and if using two mirrors, include the space between)
  3. Couch- Lets say the usable wall is about 9' long, then a 6' long couch will feel balanced
  4. More - there are a lot more ways to use this - so when trying to decide the best proportion for something, start at 2/3 and go from there!

*This does not always work and every space is different. Make sure you using the perceived or usable space - so for example, in an open concept layout, you'll use the part of the wall that is the 'living room' part of the space not the entire length of the living/dining/kitchen
