Hello Reader,
It's been a wild week of packing up room in home and clearing things out due to my unexpected major home repair...but it's perfect timing for my new email series; Decluttering for Real Life.
For the next several weeks, I'll share some very specific, tried and true tips to get your home more organized and easier to style.
Today, let's start off with one of my all time favorite decluttering tips; the OHIO Rule...
O.H.I.O
You're probably wondering, "what in the heck does Ohio have to do with this?" Well, as someone who's only driven through Cleveland, it's just a helpful acronym to remember while you're going through items:
Only Handle It Once.
I cannot tell you how helpful this has been to me over the years. As someone who can be indecisive or clears out one area just by shifting things somewhere else ๐ซฃ - I commit to this rule.
This means, I pick up an item and I decide EXACTLY one time where it will go:
- Find a designated place
- Put it in the donation pile
- Recycle it
- Give it another purpose (for example, I use older vintage plates as plant saucers)
I do NOT (or try really really hard) to just move to another basket, drawer, area, room.
This has made a world of difference in getting & staying organized!
