Hello Reader,
Ready for another week in the series, "What Should I Do With This Space?"
If you're just joining us, I asked readers to submit their most challenging spaces - I'll share my decor ideas and everyone can take away some ideas.
I love tackling design challenges, it's like a decor puzzle for me. And I'm super excited to share that with you all. (Have a space to submit? scroll down for the details).
Today we've got a basic extra room - sometimes the boxy spaces are the challenge. And the takeaway here for EVERYONE is the importance of proportion.
Reader Space:
Alright, here's a room submitted by one of you! It's described as an extra bedroom that she's hoping to turn into a cozy reading space.
Remember - we're going to tackle this specific room but, in doing so, you can apply the solutions to your own spaces.
When looking at this room, here are some challenges I see that need to be addressed:
- Boxy: like lots of extra rooms, this space is a long basic square which can actually be tough. Plus the squared furniture makes it more boxy- I have tricks for this
- Proportions: Lots of cute decor and a lovely dresser, however, they are not proportionate to the space. - See below for the fix!
- Lower Ceilings: I'm not certain but the ceilings seem a little low - easy solution
Designed Space:
Alright - here is what I came up! I'll go through each change to and explain my thinking:
- Consider changing rug direction, current layout emphasize long tunnel effect, turning it creates a cozy space
- Lower, longer cabinet that is about 2/3 the length of back wall bring forward the space forward creating depth in the box - mix of drawers & shelves for books and other storage
- Add low accent profile chair with ottoman (reading naps!)- lower profile for shorter ceilings and angled slightly changes boxy situation
- Larger artwork more proportionate to wide back wall, so the pieces aren't little island
- Tall plant and floor lamp add height and soften the boxiness
The reader might use some of the smaller tables here as end tables - plus it's still spacious enough for a blow up mattress if it needs to function as a true guest room.
What do you think? I hope this design gives some ideas about how to tackle a box room and the power of proportion!
