Do you ever get overwhelmed with home projects - maybe you're not sure where to start or you pick a room...and then what?
Every now and (always) then it happens to me too. I'm in a house that I love so much but man, is she holding on to her '90s vibes. Brass door knobs, carpets on every level, and tiled countertops that never look clean.
And even though I've remodeled my fair share of homes, sometimes it feels like too much.
So then what?
TIP: Remember, Function First
Well, when I start feeling this way and really in the thick of it, I remind myself to choose function first.
This means that a well designed space focuses on how well it works in daily life.
"Beauty is in the details, but comfort is in the function"
previous entryway closet I spruced up with hooks, baskets, and removing doors to add function
What would this look like in real life? Right now, for example, I've chosen to focus on the walk in closet in my primary bedroom over a lower priority project.
It's been the dumping ground since I moved in here two years ago. It's depressing, I can't find anything, and items are getting smooshed together. So that's where I'm spending my time over the next several weeks - choosing function.
Here's some other ways this might show up:
During a kitchen remodel, focusing on how to make it more functional (big sink, stain proof countertops, ample drawers) instead of just painted to look pretty
When sprucing up an entryway, focusing on storage and appropriate rugs for heavy wear
Update a bathroom with mildew resistant paint and double hooks to keep towel off floor
➡️ So - if you're feeling stuck, ask yourself, "Which area in my home is not working as well as it could?" "Is there one change in a space that would make everything function more smoothly?" Then, start there!
