Im all about shifting mindsets - from therapy to how I approach my workday, sometimes, changing how we think about something - even slightly, can make all the difference!
And that is so true when it comes to home decorating as well!
I know when I stopped asking myself one question and switched to a different way of thinking - it made all my decor dilemmas easier to solve.
I've also noticed it comes up a lot in my 1:1 calls so I figured it was worth sharing here as well! Ready for it.....
Stop Asking: Where Should This Go?
This question. This one is not usually helpful. We pick up a vase, a piece of art, maybe an accent chair and say hmmm, where should this go? We look around our house and find a place it might work.
Why is this a problem? Well, when we do this we end up settling and compromising and just moving stuff around.
Instead Ask: What Does The Space Need?
I say, set those items aside and step back and ask what does this space need? Maybe it's height or texture or a larger piece of furniture, or proportion. Thennnnnn, go back to the items you have and figure out what solves THAT problem.
Let's looks at an example:
โ
I found this stock photo of an entry way space. It's a good blank space. It does sort of look like someone walked around though and thought, "hmm, can I put a round mirror here? Sure, why not. How about this little bitty wall hanging? Ok."
The result? It looks sparse and disproportionate.
Instead: what does this space NEED?
That long wall needs a longer table (remember the 2/3 rule from last week?)
The tall ceiling needs more height - maybe a taller arched mirror or a vertical potted plant
The rooms are all a version of greige - and need some contrast - maybe a larger, vertical black framed art print instead of that wall hanging?
We could go on - this space is a little wonky but hopefully that gives you an idea!
