This week, I've worked with so many of you on your spaces (yay!)- making decisions about paint and furniture layout and even creative storage options. Plus, I've had to make a lot of decisions over here with my home renovation - it made me think about this fun design game I used to play in my head...
"If I could only change one thing in this room...."
Because sometimes, that's all we've got. Whether, it's time or money or resources - changing one thing might be the only or best option. And sometimes, changing that one thing, makes everything else fall into place.
Sooo, I decided for the next 5-6 weeks, we'll play this game every week - we'll look at a space, and I'll decide the ONE THING I would change to improve that area.
Living Rooms
Today, we'll focus on the one thing that makes a huge impact in a living room. There are so many aspects to a living room- wall color, furniture size, layout, flooring. If I could only change one simple thing to update this space - it would be..... and AREA RUG!
Now, not just any rug of course. But a rug that is the right size - not too big or too small, can make all the difference. (Check out the mock up below to see the difference)
Good size rug - proportionate to room and furniture sits on it comfortably
Contrast Below:
Too Small Rug - it looks like it's a little island!
No Rug: furniture is floating and not grounded
Here are some quick tips:
Front Legs: A rug grounds the space when the front legs of the furniture rest just over the edge of the rug
Good Proportion: Be sure to keep the rug a good 8-10" from the wall or the next space
Tape It Out: Use painter's tape to "sketch out" the rug size before committing to one.
No Rug: Living rooms without a rug tend to make the furniture look like they're "floating around" instead of anchored an intentional.
