Don't Make One of These Area Rug Mistakes!

Making Spaces

Hello Reader,

When it comes to home styling, I'm not a big fan of rules or trends. Hopefully, one of the things that brought you here is a common goal of making home authentic - process over perfection.

That said, there are some good design guidelines I follow. These are less about someone's random rule and more about how our brains see a space. I dove into these last year - maybe I'll a do another series?

In any case, one issue I see out there time and again is area rugs. Honestly, it's one of the quickest and easiest ways to update a space.

What are the two main mistakes?

  • No rug at all
  • Rug is too small

Why is this an issue? Most spaces benefit from a rug. They have this magic power of drawing a little line around an area and our brains read it as grounding the space. Without, furniture feels like it's floating in outer space and maybe we don't realize it but our brains sure do.

And if the rug is there but too small - the space automatically becomes off. It's like a cute outfit but the shirt is youth size or like a tiny plate for a big slice of cake. The element are there but it just ain't right.

So how do we fix this? I know rugs are overwhelming. So. Many. Options. Good news - I've broken it all down for you in my rug guide: Photos, Charts, Exact Sizes for each room.
