Things are in full swing over here with my home exterior getting painted this week. I'll have a whole lot more about that in the coming weeks (scroll to the end for a sneak peek). All of this transition and decluttering has made me think about items I've let go of over the years.
Often we talk about decor items to add or buy for a space, but funny enough, there's a lot of things I've stopped buying. I thought it might be helpful to share the 3 decor items I've completely stopped buying and what I do instead.
mix of dried greenery, real plants, and lots of things with a story (that tumbleweed is from a road trip and the artwork is from a vacation)
❌ Fake plants They collect dust, they fade, and they don't actually bring life into a room. I no longer buy these to low-maintenance real plants (pothos, snake plants, ZZ plants) and dried greenery (see below for tips).
❌ Random knickknacks If it doesn't have a story, I don't buy it anymore. I've leaned into found natural objects, things from outside, and things my kids have made. Way more personal, way less clutter.
❌ Art filler Buying art just to fill a wall is out. Now I only bring home pieces with a story; thrifted finds, something my son painted, art from a place I've traveled. And I buy what the wall needs; tall walls = vertical items
I know the fake plant topic can be hard & dedicating time to real plants can be a challenge so I've created a post on creative ways to get the look & feel of greenery without real or fake plants!
